Glamorganshire side Cottrell Park defeated Creigiau Golf Club in a close fought Ping Mixed Team Challenge Final at The Monmouthshire Golf Club.

Having come through their semi-final match against Machynys Peninsula earlier in the day, Victories for Bryce & Roberts, and Williams & Cullinane ensured the win for Jenny McGlyne’s side

In a tight final, the winning point was secured when youngster Cullinane pitched to within inches on the 17th to force a concession and the all important second point for Cottrell.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be receiving this trophy” remarked McGlyne. “I am so proud of my team and they have played fantastically through-out the year.”

Keeping the team together has worked wonders for Cottrell Park, with the first rounds of the Championship being played back in early spring. “We have kept the same team of 6 almost all the way through the Championship, and I am delighted for them to all play today and come out on top”

Cottrell Park boast a rich history in recent years, reaching the finals day on 3 of the last 4 years prior to victory on Monday. “We have had a 2nd, 3rd & 4th in recent times, so to add the win is just brilliant” continued McGlyne.”

In the other morning semi-final, Creigiau came through their match with Radyr Golf Club despite being forced to forfeit one game due to lateness.

However Radyr bounced back well in the afternoon to claim 3rd place in a thriller against the Llanelli club.

“Our congratulations to Cottrell Park; they played some great golf when it really mattered” said David Wilson, Championship Manager.

“They have a strong recent past in this event so to go one better this time out is a remarkable achievement by the team”

Davies & Nicholls grab the Ping Plate Trophy

As well as the Championship, the Ping Mixed Plate was run on the same day, with all clubs reaching the last 16 invited to compete.

Played as an individual foursomes stableford, the home team of Tom Davies & Tania Nicholls stormed to victory with a stunning return of 42 and come out on top by a remarkable eight points

Wilson continued “The Monmouthshire proved a great host once again to our Championships and it was great to see so many people competing in both the Challenge and the Plate.”

“Our huge thanks also to Ping for continuing to support this great event, and the prizes provided were magnificent and very well received. We have a wonderful relationship with Ping and they are invaluable to this Championship.”
