Dilys John, a former Lady Captain at Llanishen Golf club, celebrated her 100th birthday in style at her old stomping ground.

Known as a ‘demon’ table tennis player and an even better golfer Dilys, who now resides by Roath Lake in Cardiff, was greeted by 80 members of the Ladies section, old and new.

The event organised by the club she loved so dearly until her mid-90s allowed all the members to celebrate a life that has comprised of 7 Foursomes Cup wins as well as numerous other golfing memories. Following an afternoon tea, videos of Dilys performing in the Golf Club pantomime were shown.

Claire Constantine, the current Lady Captain of Llanishen Golf Club, spoke about how much Dilys had meant to Llanishen and some of her favourite memories.

“Dilys leaves a great legacy behind her. Dilys was Lady’s Captain in 1989 and is mentioned on many of our boards for winning the Foursomes Cup alongside Gill Edwards. She is part of the heart of the very club.”

During the evening, friends and fellow members of the club shared their stories about Dilys. One experience everyone spoke about was Dilys walking up the 18th hole at Llanishen in her kilt and socks, carrying her bag on her back rather than using a trolley.

Claire told us more. “She’s a bygone era, but she’s all the best bits of it. When you see her in that picture dressed in her kilt and her socks and carrying her bag, she was everything that kept everyone going, very hardy.”

A very happy 100th birthday to Dilys, from all at Wales Golf.
