Today, March 8th is international women’s day, and to celebrate we have a special guest blog from Golfing sisters Georgina and Rachel Lewis

5 things that we like about Golf

Hello, we are Rachel and Georgia Lewis, and we’ve both been playing golf since the age of 10. We are both, past and present county and Welsh International players with the ambition of sharing our passion for the game of golf through coaching individuals of all ages.

By reading this, then hopefully you’re thinking about learning to play golf, which would be brilliant, as we are about to tell you our top 5 things that we like the most about our sport. More importantly however, 5 things that will convince you to start playing golf, and make you wonder why you haven’t already started!

Here’s our top 5:

  1. Family Time

We love the fact that golf is a sport that the entire family can do together. We come from a golfing family, and so it’s great that we are able to have days out, and spend some time together playing golf. During the winter season, where we are having a break from tournaments, and working to improve for the season ahead, so we usually go to Southerndown or Llanishen Golf Club, and have a knock with Dad on a Sunday. Ideal sport to get all the family involved!

  1. Friendships

Golf is a very social sport, and we’ve been fortunate to make so many friends through competing in various competitions & training with both county and Welsh teams. We were part of the South Wales Girls Association, which is a fun organisation for girls (up to the age of 18) who travel around South Wales to play in competitions. We like the fact that golf is such a friendly sport, and that has given us friendships that will last forever, simply from playing in competitions such as those provided by SWGGA.

  1. Being Active

Like any other sport, golf is a way of keeping active and healthy. A study by Edinburgh University found that golfers typically burnt a minimum of 500 calories over 18 holes and those walking the course could cover between 4 to 8 miles. Golf gives you an opportunity to get out in the fresh air, at all times of the year, even in the sun, wind, rain, and yes, even the snow! We’ve learnt how to adapt to these conditions however and learn new techniques!

  1. Fancy travelling the world?

One of the things we like the most about golf is the fact that there is a lot of travelling involved. We’ve been lucky enough to play golf in various destinations including Australia, USA, Peru, Slovakia, Portugal, Denmark, Germany & all over the UK & Ireland, and that’s to only name a few. We have experienced different cultures & destinations and trips where we have made memories that will last a lifetime. You can’t tell us that travelling the world to play golf isn’t tempting?

  1. Fun & Passion

Lastly, we like golf because it gives up the opportunity to pass on our passion to other children and give them the same enjoyment that we have out of playing golf. We’ve done several classes where we have gone to primary schools, high schools, festivals and taught golf to individuals, and it’s great to see the enjoyment they get out of it. Our ambitions are to continue to provide fun activities that will proceed to get more individuals into golf.

We hope this has helped your decision on why you should learn to play golf!
