March 26, 2018.

It was a development double for North Wales golf club at the Wales Golf Awards ceremony held in the 2010 Clubhouse in Celtic Manor.

Robin Hughes won the Golf Development Wales PGA Professional of the Year, having had 10,000 people attend his sessions at the club and in the community.

Shauna Lyons made it a North Wales club double collecting the Volunteer of the Year award. She is Junior Club captain at the Llandudno club and helps to run five junior sessions a week with players ranging from 4-17 years-old.

The ceremony was held in the Samuel Ryder Suite at the 2010 Clubhouse and was sponsored by One Golf Network, a marketing and distribution network for golf clubs.

“We had a lot of different groups, all totally different, and from that I got to work with the elite players at county level as well,” said 28-year-old Hughes, who is nearing the completion of his PGA qualifications.

“I am starting to take this to other local golf courses, working with juniors, beginners and ladies.

“I will be fully qualified at the end of the year and want to have my own academy, I love teaching and feel as long as I can get people there then they will continue playing golf.

“I started at Cardiff University where someone suggested I coach some beginners, then at a university competition someone offered me the chance to go over the America the following summer at a golf camp.

“I worked in multi-sports on a cruise ship, surfing instructor, zip line, football, lots of different sports, so to get the numbers I am getting I use rugby, cricket, tennis – anything just to make it fun.

“For example, if someone does not like golf, but I know they like cricket then I will let them throw a ball towards the flag to get them going.”

Lyons, aged 17, added, “I did not expect this, I just do it because I enjoy it, it is one big family where I am so to get recognition shows what I am doing is good and helping golf develop further into the future.

“I started getting into it through my school, you have to do 30 hours through my PE course, so I was looking at golf as somewhere to do that.

“They took me to Robin and he let me do that working with the kids, I did my 30 hours but I did not want to leave. Robin got me into doing more things at my school, Ysgol Dyfffryn Conwy in Llanrwst, and now we are getting more girls involved in sport.”

Wales golf chief executive Richard Dixon said, “It is always great to recognise some of the golfing work which goes on around Wales and the successes that brings at all levels.

“It was a well-deserved double for the North Wales club with Robin Hughes doing an outstanding job as one of the club professionals and Shauna Lyons thoroughly deserving the volunteer award.”
