STATEMENT ON THE R&A GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ HOME INTERNATIONALS

STATEMENT ON THE R&A GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ HOME INTERNATIONALS

On the morning of Thursday 5 August, a male player competing as part of the mixed Wales girls’ and boys’ team displayed symptoms of Covid-19.

As a result, the player and his team-mates who were identified as close contacts were asked to self-isolate in their hotel as a precautionary measure and did not compete in the fixture against England yesterday. The England team was awarded a walkover result for the boys’ foursomes and singles matches in which those players did not participate.

The player has since undertaken a PCR test and is confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19. He is now required to self-isolate under current UK government guidelines. We wish the player a speedy recovery.

The individual team members and officials who have been identified as close contacts are required to follow current UK and Welsh government guidelines which has resulted in all boys in the Wales team being withdrawn from the event. The girls are not considered to be close contacts with the team having operated two separate buddy groups and will continue in the event.

Both The R&A and Wales Golf recognise how unfortunate this situation is for the team but is necessary to protect the health and safety of everyone involved in the home international matches. We are confident that the protocols we have in place have ensured that play has continued safely for all players and officials.

Wales Golf ensures that the safety of all players remains the priority. We are confident that the case was identified at the earliest time. All procedures were followed to ensure the risk of transmission was mitigated.
