Bryn Meadows pairing of Eirlys Thomas & Dee Hughes carded 33 points in the Australian Spoons Championship Final played at The Monmouthshire Golf Club to take home the silverware.

With the Abergavenny course playing long, scoring in the foursome format was tough to come by but courtesy of a very consistent performance Thomas & Hughes finished four points clear of the team from Langland Bay, represented by Deborah Howard and Chris Skubala.

All finalists will have successfully negotiated a club qualifier, then the Regional Finals, to claim their spot in the final and the Bryn Meadows duo were clearly delighted to come out on top.

“Absolutely thrilled to win it!” exclaimed Hughes, “we thought we might have thrown it away with a no score at the last, but Eirlys & I dovetailed well throughout the round.”

“To come through to the final is brilliant, but to then go on and win is fantastic!”

And Thomas & Hughes are clearly a formidable team. The pair are no strangers to success this season, having teamed up to take the Glamorgan County Silver Salver at Creigiau Golf Club back in August.

“We have had a great end to our season” continues Hughes. “To win both the County Salvers & the Australian Spoons together is just amazing.”

Ashton Bradbury, Wales Golf Chairman of Championships & Rules said “Congratulations to Eirlys & Dee on what was a great win for Bryn Meadows.”

“The course was playing long but was presented beautifully and The Monmouthshire Golf Club once again proved itself as a wonderful venue for our National Finals.”

The Australian Spoons is celebrating 50 years having been first played in 1967, with Llanishen the fist club to win the Championship.
