The superb Lakeside (Garthmyl) Golf Club, 9 hole course, in the heart of Wales, played host to event 4 of the 2019 Ping Junior Tour. This course always offers a great test to the golfers (and even better lunches) and around 70 golfers arrived to kick off the 2nd half of our Ping Junior Tour events this year.

The Under 14’s competition teeing off first and playing the 2 configurations of this 9 hole course to make up their 18, were unlucky to be out in the worst of the weather, but nonetheless we were treated to some very strong scoring. Callum Walters (Maesteg Golf Club) produced the highest stableford score we have seen so far this year taking a comfortable win with 48 points and with it the top boy award. This was Callum’s first Junior Tour event and has only been playing golf for 8 months and so it really was a superb effort. Kian Evans (Llantrisant & Pontyclun Golf Club) produced an excellent performance to come home in 2nd with 42 points with Kian Orford (Llanwern Golf Club) taking the final spot on the podium with 41 points. Annabel Collis (Mold Golf Club) took home the top girl award with 32 points.

William Pontin (Pyle & Kenfig) returned to winning ways in the under 12 category with 62 points from his 9 holes in the modified stable scoring method. Aaron Mohun (Wrexham Golf Club), playing in his 2nd event of the year, came in a close 2nd on 61 with Thomas Edwards (Builth Wells) producing another excellent performance to take the final spot on the podium with 60 points scored. Jemma Nand-Lal (Milford Haven) took the top girls prize with an excellent 56 points.

For the 1st time this year Fallon Sawyers-Grandon (Swansea Bay) failed to take the top spot in the under 10’s category having to settle for third place with 57 points. The top spot was instead taken by Alicia Kelly (Wernddu Golf Club) who scored a superb 60 points to take the overall win in the Under 10’s category and become our first girl to win a 2019 age category. Superb effort. Casper Van Rensburg (Celtic Manor) took a close 2nd on 59 points, his 2nd runners-up spot in a row also taking home the top boy award.

Oliver Hulbert (Monmouthshire Golf Club) kept up his winning record in the U’8 category scoring 58 points to take the top spot on the podium and top boy award. Ricky Mohun (Wrexham Golf Club) matched his brothers performance in the Under 12’s to also take a 2nd position scoring 56 points with George Elwin (Padeswood & Buckley) taking third with 50 points. Abigail Van Rensburg playing in her first event (at just 5 years old) took the girls award to mean her and her older brother also both took awards home.

Our thanks go to Lakeside (Garthmyl) Golf Club for being so accommodating, to all the competitors, including the parents, grandparents and guardians that took the time to bring their children and let them enjoy the day. We would like to further send our gratitude to the volunteers who helped run the event and extend our thanks to Ping, for helping us to run this fantastic tour.
