Finals Week is a success

Finals Week is a success

Wales Golf Finals Week was a great success over four days at Llanishen Golf Club in Cardiff, with players coming from all around Wales to compete for six titles.

Llanishen Golf Club proved an excellent host for the events, with great weather and a course in perfect condition.  The club and its members played a big part in that success with their volunteer support throughout the four days.

To start things off Newport Links pair Marilyn Hughes and Wendy Pezzuto won the Australian Spoons on countback, while on the second  Stan Hudson and Desmond Stone, Tenby Golf Club claimed the Senior Greensomes title, once again on countback.

The third day saw two matches in the PING Mixed foursomes with Pontardawe beating Clays in the semi-final and then going on to beat Cardigan in the Final.

The Welsh Mixed Medal was won by Huw Watkins, aged 16, from Holyhead.

The last day of competition saw the Women’s Inter-County Final, with Glamorgan beating Mid Wales by the narrow margin of 5-4, winning the morning foursomes 2-1 and drawing the afternoon singles matches 3-3 in a nailbiter finish.

“Finals week is a relatively new addition to the calendar, but rapidly making itself the major event for club golfers around Wales,” said Tournament Director Daniel Fullager.

“It was good to see competitors travelling the full length and breadth of Wales, as well as some coming from only a few miles away.

“The standard was excellent, while Llanishen provided a great challenge. The club staff and members went to great lengths to make it such a success and their help was greatly appreciated by players and organisers alike.

“There were a host of very tight matches. Congratulations to everyone who reached this stage, but especially all the winners.”
