Gareth Bale presents the prizes at the inaugural Gareth Bale Festival of Sport

Gareth Bale took a short break from preparing for Wales’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine to present the prizes in the first junior golf championship bearing his name.

The first Gareth Bale Festival of Sport Championship was won by Callum Hook, Pyle and Kenfig, while Gareth Bale also welcomed and encouraged junior players across a wide range of sports.

Brodi Lewis, Southerndown, was second with William Pontin, also Pyle and Kenfig, in third, while Sofia Benitez was in 10th and the leading girl in the mixed event.

Hook said, “I was a little bit nervous having a star Welsh football player watching me, but I just kept it calm, parred the last hole for the win.

“It feels amazing, after shooting three over first round to put myself into contention and seven under in the second round to put myself into the lead, then keeping it simple today to get the win.

“It was a question of keeping my head and playing the golf I can play. I have my GCSE’s in a couple of weeks so it is a busy time.

Sophie Madsen, the Tournament Director, added, “It was inspirational for the players to have the chance to meet Gareth Bale and receive the prizes from such a global sporting superstar.

“We hope the Gareth Bale Championship will continue to grow each year, along-side the multi-sports festival which was a huge success hosted at the Vale Resort.

“Congratulations to Callum on a superb performance over the two days, the highlight being an impressive second round 68, but this was an event with a lasting legacy and I hope all participants have been inspired for life.

A huge thank you must go to Gareth Bale, ICM Stellar Sports, The R&A and Sport Wales who made the event possible.
