Welsh girls between the ages of 6-18 will get the chance to learn golf through the new Girls Golf Cymru scheme launched by Wales Golf.

Girls-only coaching sessions, with the emphasis on fun, social and friendship aspects, will be delivered by clubs across Wales. Statistics show 13% of golf membership are female and Wales Golf wants to help more women and girls into the sport so it can truly become ‘Everyone’s Game, Anywhere.’

The scheme will launch at Bryn Meadows golf club, near Caerphilly on Saturday, May 11, 1pm, with further sessions at Parc golf club, Newport, May 15, 5pm, and Llanishen golf club in Cardiff, Sunday, May 19, 10am. The scheme will then be rolled out across Wales.

The groups of girls will be learning the basics of the sport over a series of six, weekly, one hour sessions, culminating in playing on the course. There will also be a free US Kids iron and goodie bag for participants.

Girls Golf Cymru is a joint programme run by Wales Golf and the Golf Foundation.

The programme aims to create an environment where girls feel comfortable and confident to participate. The centres offer a clear pathway for them to continue their enjoyment of the sport while growing their friendship circle.
“This is a great way for girls in Wales to find out if golf is the game for them,” explained Wales Golf women and girls co-ordinator Simon Lu.

“Participants will get together with other beginners to relax and play fun games. PGA professional coaches will lead the activities and Girls Golf Cymru Ambassadors from local clubs will be on hand to help and encourage.

“Equipment will be provided and there will be plenty of time to chat and make new friends.

“These sessions will also be really relaxed in terms of dress code, anything comfy and warm will be fine and wearing trainers will also be no problem, which will hopefully make the girls feel more at home as well.

“Alongside making friends and learning new skills, we hope everyone involved will enjoy themselves and want to join girls-only coaching groups and continue playing golf as a result.”
