Playing for Wales

Eligibility and selection

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is “How do I get selected to play for Wales?”

Before explaining selection it is important to understand how you become eligible to play for Wales. For this reason we have recently updated our eligibility criteria which governs entry in to our Close Championships and also details who can be picked to represent Wales. Full details on this criteria can be viewed in the Download Files section at the bottom of this page.

We have a number of excellent ranking systems available to us in the amateur game that help us to recognise who the best performing golfers are in an objective way. We also have a team of selectors and coaches that attend the major amateur tournaments at boys, men’s, girl’s, ladies and seniors level to continuously assess the players that are performing well and deserve the chance to represent Wales.

Our Selection Policies detail the key selection criteria which influence what selectors look for when selecting Welsh teams. Players who perform well, consistently achieve good results and show a good attitude on and off the golf course will be rewarded with Welsh representation when the opportunity arises.

Wales Golf selects players and teams for a number of events throughout the season.
