Wales Golf championships postponed or cancelled

May 20, 2020
Wales Golf have moved the Welsh Amateur Championship back until a provisional date in October, while unfortunately a series of other events planned for this summer have had to be cancelled.

Those include the Ping Welsh Junior tour, which has proved to be a growing success in recent years helping younger players get into golf and develop their competitive play.

In all instances full refunds will be made for entries into these championships.

“Wales Golf continue to monitor the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak and the health and safety of all prospective competitors is the top priority,” explained Wales Golf Championship Manager David Wilson.

“Following recent publications from Welsh Government, the decision to cancel or postpone these championships has been made.

We have taken a number of factors into account, including availability of local infrastructure and services, social distancing protocols and the gathering of large groups.”

Championships which were due to take place in July, and those requiring qualification rounds or events, have been affected.

  • Welsh Boys & Girls Championship (Cardigan) – Postponed
  • Welsh Amateur Championship (Newport) – Postponed
  • Welsh Team Championship (Porthmadog) – Cancelled
  • Welsh Ladies Team Championship (Pyle and Kenfig)– Cancelled
  • Ping Mixed Foursomes (Padeswood and Buckley) – Cancelled
  • Victory Shield Foursomes (Newport) – Cancelled

The Welsh Ladies Amateur Championship had already been postponed until later in the year.

“It is with great regret that the decision has been made to cancel the 2020 Ping Junior Tour for the safety of all involved,” added Wilson.

“We are still aiming to be able to crown Welsh champions for 2020 in the various categories, though of course these plans are under constant review.

“A provisional date of the 5th & 6th October has been arranged for the Welsh Amateur Championship, with full Terms of Competition and entry details to follow.

“We would like to thank everybody for their understanding as we try to best navigate our way through these difficult circumstances.”
