Firman first in Welsh Seniors Open
Welsh Open Men’s Seniors Champion, Aide Firman

England’s Aide Firman won the Welsh Seniors Open title at Glamorganshire Golf Club just outside Cardiff.

The Luffenham Heath player beat compatriot David Westwood in a play-off after both players registered one over par scores at the challenging parkland course.

Westwood had been in control of his own destiny before a bogey on the 18th put him into the play-off, where tangling with out-of-bounds proved to be his undoing.

The top Welsh performer was Brian Rigby, taking advantage of local knowledge on his home course, who was tied eighth. Mike White from West Wiltshire was the next best placed Welshman in tied 11th.

Firman’s consistency was key to his victory, with rounds of 71, 70 and 70, scoring two under par on his final nine holes. “It feels great to win,” he said afterwards. “It is good to come to Wales every year for this event.

“Unfortunately in Tenby last year I did not do so well in the final round, fell away a bit in bad weather, but today the weather stayed dry.

“I just took each shot as it happens, made a key birdie on 16, but David let me sneak into the play-off with a par up the last.”

Wales Golf tournament director, Sophie Madsen, added, “Congratulations to Aide on his fine win, based round a really strong final nine holes, and commiserations to David who seemed in control until the finish and play-off got away from him.

“Also thanks to the members and staff at Glamorganshire who helped stage a fine event, with the course in top condition to provide an excellent challenge to many of the best senior golfers in the UK.”
